Volunteer -we need your help!
The awesome instrumental music program we have at North Farmington High School doesn't happen by magic. We're a community of teachers, students and parents all working together to provide the best opportunities for the kids. Parent helpers are needed throughout the year for a variety of 'behind the scenes' tasks. Whether you can help for an hour or a week, let us know!
Concert Uniform Fitting
We need parents (both Mom's and Dad's) to help get the kids set up with their Concert Uniforms for the year.
Folks can help out by working registration tables (take money, answer questions), fitting students (we'll teach you how -it's easy) and 'float' to help out wherever needed.
Sign-up information will be provided - check Remind and the listserv emails.

TAG Days
What is Tag Days? Tag Days is a critical fundraiser for Farmington high school music departments where the students, dressed in their uniforms and concert attire, collect donations in front of businesses in the Farmington/Farmington Hills, Novi and West Bloomfield areas. In exchange for donations our students will give the donator a Tag (ticket) to any one of our high school Tag Days concerts. In just a day and a half, we'll raise about $15,000!
As you see, this is a large undertaking and we need EVERYONE'S participation.
The students will sign up for Tag shifts in their music classes. We especially need Parent Drivers to take the kids to and from their Tag locations (for each shift we're missing a driver, we miss out on several hundred dollars of donations!). Other jobs include Shift Workers (registering volunteers, organizing drivers & riders, etc) and Money Counters. And, of course, everyone needs to be fed!

Marching Band Volunteers
Marching band cannot be successful without parent volunteers. As soon as band camp starts in the summer, there are roles that need to be fulfilled – as a former Boosters president said, many hands make light work.
Certain volunteer positions are event-oriented (varsity jackets, band banquet, uniform fittings), and others are needed throughout the season to enable the band to be safe and successful. Below are descriptions of roles and responsibilities - if you have any specific questions, please reach out to the marching band coordinator at [email protected] and we'll happily provide you with additional information.

- Uniform Fittings
- there is always a need for anyone who is able and willing to sew to make the necessary uniform adjustments each year
- Can't sew? How about reading a measuring tape or filling out paperwork? Hanging uniforms back on the hangers? We have to measure and fit all of the members of the band (including color guard) for their uniforms, which normally requires multiple sessions.
- there is always a need for anyone who is able and willing to sew to make the necessary uniform adjustments each year
- Coordinate varsity jacket event
- Contact the vendor and schedule ‘try on’ day – we try to have it during a Wednesday after school rehearsal session as close to the beginning of the school year as possible
- Collect order forms, deposits from families (we have templates – and the NFHS Music Boosters issue a single check to the varsity jacket vendor, who then will craft all of the jackets, including attaching any letters, medals, etc. – to have it ready for the marching band banquet)
- At the banquet, ensure that the jackets are available for the kids to receive
- Send volunteer requirements for the event to Kathryn Walby for the Sign-Up Genius (fitting: parents to help the students fill out forms, try on jackets; banquet: organize table)
- Marching Band banquet
- Schedule the banquet – we’ve been going to St. Mary’s Cultural Center in Livonia for the last few years; normally the banquet is around the first week of December
- Set up registration and payment page for families attending the banquet – work with Laurie Olsen, the webmaster for nfhsmusic.org and all of the other technology we use throughout the season
- Consult with Cheryl Clark, band coordinator, Peggy Babcock, band director, and Matt Greenburg, assistant band director regarding the structure of the program, menu, decorations, etc.
- Send volunteer requirements for the event to Kathryn Walby for the Sign-Up Genius (setup, cleanup, acquisition of decorations, gifts, etc.)
- Marching band fundraisers –
- information can be shared/gathered from Pauline Kim, who coordinates fundraising for the entire Music Boosters program; generally, the responsibilities are limited to coordinating dates, sharing volunteer needs, and coordinating updates with Kathryn Walby, marching band coordinator)
- Car wash
- Tag Days (entire music program at both NFHS and FHS)
- Potlucks:
- Since the students will have some very long days on Football Fridays, we provide a potluck dinner to the band members and volunteers prior to when the band needs to go change into their uniforms. For each potluck, there will be slots for main dishes (vegetarian and other), side dishes, desserts, drinks, disposable dishware, etc.
- Game Day Volunteer positions:
- Helpers to set up and serve food and drinks (3): Arrive at cafeteria at 4:10 pm to help serving area - eating will be both inside and outside the Auditorium
- Cleanup crew (3): Clean the cafeteria room after the potluck.
- Pregame and half-time uniform helpers (3): arrive at the band room at 5:15 to help the students put on uniforms, add plumes to sheikos. During halftime, help students hang uniform jackets on racks
- Half-time snack server (2): cart water bottles and snacks out to behind field, set up snacks for halftime, check there is enough snacks, bring everything back to uniform room at end of game
- Traffic (7): block traffic in the parking lot and on Raider Way while the band is marching to and from the field before and after the game. Assignment is from 5:45pm through arrival of the band in the stadium, then at the end of 4th quarter (normally around 5 minutes left in the regular game clock) until the band is dismissed from formation behind the band room.
- Equipment crew (Pit and drum major stand) (6): Move and setup the drum major podiums before the pregame and for the half-time show. Help Pit move their equipment to and from the field for the half-time show.
- Uniform helpers at the end of the game (3): Report to below the band bleachers when the game clock shows 9 minutes left in the last quarter. Help band members with the uniforms at the end of the game and help with organizing and storing uniforms after dismissal.
- Parade Support (Homecoming):
- Parade Support (3-4): hand out, carry water, support directors, walk with band
- Parade Transport (4-6): drive students with instruments from NFHS to Forest Elementary prior to parade start
- Serve Pizza to the Horde (3): after the halftime show, help to serve pizza to the band members
